Plant care

Keeping your plant happy.

These are the same notes we share with everyone at our tent — honest about what is easy and what takes a little practice.

Hands tending to potted houseplants

Light

Bright indirect light means a spot where you could read comfortably all day without a lamp — usually a few feet from an east or north window. South and west windows here in Arizona are strong, so a sheer curtain keeps leaves from scorching. Low-light plants still want a window, just not the sun itself.

Watering

Skip the schedule and check with your finger. When the top inch or two of soil feels dry, water until it runs out the bottom, then empty the saucer. Roots sitting in water is the most common thing we see go wrong — our dry air means most plants need less than you would think.

Self-watering pots

Many of our plants come in self-watering pots. Fill the reservoir, then let it run dry for a day or two before refilling so roots get air. Top-water the soil for the first few weeks after you bring the plant home, until roots reach down into the reservoir.

Pet safety

Every listing tells you whether a plant is pet-friendly or toxic if ingested. Toxic does not mean dangerous to own — it means keep it on a high shelf or hanging planter, away from pets and small children. If you would rather not worry, shop our pet-friendly plants.
